This WAY

People have been looking for the meaning of life and what awaits those who pass on. Adrian Rogers shared this thought: There is only one way to Salvation. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”(John 14:6)  Materialism says, “Buy your way out.” The politician says, “Legislate”, The army says, “Fight”.  Industry say, “Work”.  The Philosopher says, “Think”, but JESUS says, “There is no way out but through ME.”  JESUS will save you by HIS GRACE, and He will save you all by Himself or you won’t be saved at all.  Your goodness will not put you in GOD’s family and your badness will not keep you away.  Every man, woman and child must take JESUS at His word. That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.   AMEN

The Wayward Wind

I am so very thankful that I was born before 1950.  Our culture has gone through drastic change since Hadacol, Doctors Devin, Spock and Phil; Saturday Night Live, Oprah, Barbie, The Beatles and Joel Osteen.  I once told my students at SFA that our nation was in trouble from the musical impact of The Beatles.  As an educated man, some of what I endured in the university classroom, rubbed off.  In discernment, I was convinced that Russian Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, once told President Richard Nixon, “Give me your youth and I will destroy you”, and, unfortunately , we did just that.  Disobedience to GOD’s WILL has led to a nation of blasphemers, liars and cheats.  Our very fibre is tattered by Satanic influence such as “Social Media” and bald-face lies in the ‘mainstream’.  I never thought I would live to see animosity and downright hatred of my President.  We are reaping what all of us have allowed to be sown for over forty-years and we are continuing to ignore 2 Chronicles 7:14: if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Adrian Rogers asked this, years ago: “Give some serious thought as to who is on the Throne of Your Life?” I’ve been there too much of mine, donchaknow.  And, that’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.  Really!  AMEN

An Enchanted Life

As you read this you must join me in celebrating “LIFE”.  The Bible teaches that ‘man’ is designed to live on earth for four score. If you have lived as long as I, then we are living Echanted Lives.  To what purpose?  Now, that’s where we become individual.  I can only answer for myself.  I believe that GOD created every one of us for a specific purpose. Aside from HIS desire that we Glorify HIM by accepting the Gift of Salvation and living a life that will do so, our course is set. How successful we are in that course is limited only to the degree of our disobedience.  HE gave us the freedom to ‘take the wheel’ and turn whatever corner we wished.  HE also provided a “GPS” called THE HOLY SPIRIT whose very quiet “directions” were easily over-shouted by our arrogance.  I made a bunch of ‘wrong turns’, but through HIS MERCY and GRACE, my life has been truly enchanted. through HIS provision.  I matriculated through over thirty years of ‘higher learning’, mostly on scholarships. With ability to sing, I managed to ‘perform’ well enough to live pretty well. I am blessed with four beautiful children and they have enriched my life with eight more.  I have been honored with over sixty years of companionship with two beautiful ladies and some very special friends. For over 45-years of successful broadcasting, I was enshrined into the Nevada Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame in 2001; directed some extremely outstanding high school and junion high school choirs;  directed many very successful stage productions and even walked the boards, professionally.  I even had a voice-over in a nationally televised hour-long program for NASCAR, and have most of my faculties. So, as I share this conversation from my beautiful ‘penthouse suite’ in Savannah of Westgate in Plano, Texas.  let’s all take a moment to say, “To GOD Be The Glory for the things HE has done!” And that’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.  AMEN

NOT SO FAST!

After being corrected by family and friends for a number of times,  I  “WaterWader” do solemnly promise to refrain from publishing falsehoods. How humiliating it is to feel strongly about something and write flowingly about something to learn that all that flowing is detritus. Number “44” is not returning to UNC.  All Star, Jackson, will be wearing the uniform of Sacramento in the upcoming NBA season.  Even at number 15, he went in the first round and that should give him and his soon-to-be-bride a very comfortable living style. So, now that I have cleared the air with a soul-cleansing confession, I digress to the Arena Football League.  From a dozen teams last year, there are only five active this year. My Philadelphia Soul is undefeated as they move into the final games. They have already qualified for the playoffs and, even though they do not blow opponents away,  they are the best team.  I am very pleased that the Arena Football League allows fans to watch games streamed live on their official website.  Budget requirements forced me to downgrade to basic cable, thus losing access to many sports channels, but since my Cowboys are always televised locally and since I can watch ESPN by internet, I really am in good shape. From now on, I promise to communicate what I know to be true and relate how good it is to awaken each morning. Just like my buddy, Leon Hale, I am blessed in my confused state, but it’s ok, since I can’t remember what is the problem.  I can report that the SmartCar is amply roomy for a six-foot-plus fellow and since the door takes up most of the side of the car, it’s a snap for ingress and egress, donchaknow.  That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.     AMEN

Jordan Being Jordan

Tied  into the second sudden death play-off, it appeared that Jordan Spieth was about to lose again. It has happened a number of times this year. Daniel Berger played better golf than he did over the back nine.  Commentators thought Berger would be ‘pumped’ over his success and gave the nod to him.  Jordan hit his approach shot into the same bunker that gave him trouble to first play-off. Daniel hooked into the high grass and his approach was less than optimum., but he was on the green, so it looked like the experts were right, and then, from the bunker, Jordan Spieth hit the perfect shot that sped directly into th cup! The crowd went wild and Daniel was yet to put, so Jordan quieted the spectators and allowed his opponent to do his best. His put was short and Jordan won the Travelers. I like Jordan Spieth. I like his manners and his graciousness. He plays to win and is very good at it, but he is a good sport when it doesn’t happen. He is pretty tough on himself, and that’s not a bad thing, except when it gets in the way of precision golf. His caddie deserves credit for this win, for sure. He calmed Jordan down when things looked darkest and that makes me proud of him also. Daniel said, “Jordon is being Jordan”, when asked by an interviewer.  Thank GOD, he is and I even forgive him for  being a ‘teasip’, donchaknow. That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.   AMEN

The Right Thing To Do

It is with a thankful heart that I learn that my family’s ‘hero of the year’ is returning to play one last season with the” Tar Heels” of UNC.  Justin Jackson’s mother is the sister of the husband of my youngest daughter.  Football will always be my favorite sport and basketball hasn’t excited me since the glory days of UNLV, but I got hooked on JJ44 and his championship team.  Justin made a run at the NBA draft last year, but decided he could work harder and make a big difference in  his team and his desirability. He did both and was rewarded with honors both national and conference-wise. He has become the catalyst for the Tar Heels and should have an even more impressive senior year. His family has always supported him, knowing that he will always do what is right. He admits that he can use one more season to make himself much more valuable as a pro.  That is definitely important since it could mean Millions of dollars difference and that’s what makes it exciting. A first rate gentleman and honorable member of our family is Justin Jackson, 44, of UNC.  Rest assured I will be watching every game that is televised where I am. I have no doubt that he will achieve and honor his Savior. That makes my team roll read, Texas Aggie, Dallas Cowboy and Philadelphia Soul football and UNC basketball, and that pretty much takes it year-round, donchaknow.  That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.   AMEN

911

It wasn’t too long ago when emergency 911 transportation cost less than $100. I’m sitting here on this day-before- Father’s Day, looking out from where I am attempting to complete a jigsaw puzzle, shaped like the USofA. It has been a struggle, but it is coming together. Just as I was placing a piece in Nevada, Plano rescue units pull up below me. I am on the parking lot side of building 1 in Savannah at Westgate and the entrance is directly below. Another of my neighbors has a problem. I decided to relocate from Colonial Village in Longview due to the number of times “911” paid a visit. This is my second full month and already I have witnessed 5 such trips. I had my first back in February when pneumonia came to call. I would have preferred that ‘she’ stay away, but no such luck. I just paid the bill for that “911” call and the resulting hospital expense and believe me, they are a bit more costly than a few years back. (And, my cost represented ‘co-pay’). The whole charge was $200 less than my annual salary when I started teaching. Praise GOD for those who answer “911”!  Shame on those who abuse the service. Tomorrow is Dad’s Day and I am so blessed to be one. Thank GOD, my son and daughters continue to check in on ‘their Daddy’.  I pray for all the men whose day is spent sitting by a silent phone or whose door doesn’t get the knock. Email is so simple today. I can’t imagine any child whose Daddy is still around, failing to at least use internet.  All the Dad’s in my family will hear from me, you bet! I am thankful to be around when tomorrow comes. And, if not, I’ll be greeted by mine and MY FATHER and that WILL be a HOOT, donchaknow. GOD bless all those who answer when ‘911’ is called and those who respond with loving care at wherever we end up. That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.  AMEN

A Full Quiver

As Father’s Day approaches, I am reminded of what GOD says about a man with a full quiver. In Psalm 127 it says that children are our arrows and when our quiver is full, we are truly blessed. I have a quiver of blessings. My daughters are solid, saved and secure. They continue to bless my heart. Anyone who knows them, understands just how blessed their mother and I are. And My SON? Well in Proverbs 23: 24 it says: “The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.”   Every day is Father’s Day to me. Every minute I praise My Loving GOD for all my blessings. Every morning I wake up with a praise song bubbling up in my heart. How can I but enjoy what has been afforded me?. How can I but rest assured in GOD’s Promises? Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill shall be laid low. My life has been filled with rough places, but most of them were there because I took the wrong turn, donchaknow. None of us should be surprised by evil that is rampant today. We have been warned, over and over, and still there are many who totally ignore TRUTH. Praise GOD for My Comforter. Praise GOD for my quiver and praise GOD for HOPE ETERNAL! My precious family continues to walk in the light and may my super son continue to make wise and GOD-inspired decisions. Many lives depend on that, donchaknow. Mine included!  You know, nothing I do surprises or disappoints GOD, but that doesn’t make it right. It’s when I do what I think without thinking about what I do that I make mistakes. Even at that, I am Too Anointed to be disappointed and Too Blessed to be depressed and my Quiver is filled with Quality, Really!  I love music and the “Music of Life” is comprised ot hymns that praise and glorify GOD. That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.  AMEN

Alias Jay Greer, J Nik Walker or Steve Wade

Entertainers seldom use their real names.  In broadcasting it is a good idea to be someone else “on-the-air”.  The same goes for professional actors. Movies are full of ‘stars’ whose names have been legally changed. Many of them were changed by the management of their particular studio. Some were changed by personal managers and some by the person. My first radio ‘gig’ was in Pampa, Texas at KPDN. I was moonlighting, so I used the name, Jay Greer. Some years after that, I was doing consulting work in Amarillo and called one of the remaining partners to say hello. I failed to identify myself as “Jay Greer” and he had no idea who I was. He must have thought he had a real nutcase on the phone. During my tenure in professional theater, I used J Nik Walker. As a member of Equity Actors Union, I couldn’t register as Jim Austin since there already was a “Jim Austin”. At that time I was ‘overnights’ at KODA-fm in Houston as “Nik Walker”, so I registered as J Nik Walker with Equity.  I had backstage visits  and notes from folks and some were quite surprised to see me “up there”.  I was mentioning the show a few months ago and one of those present couldn’t wait to inform me that she couldn’t find my name listed in the cast, at all. I had failed to explain it originally and her bubble did ‘pop’! I worked for a time at KHFI in Austin as ‘Steve Wade’. (Wade was my father’s middle name and it has always been a favorite among my kin) This blog is a spin-off of that, along with the Spiritual. “Wade in de Water”.  When I applied for my job at KODA in Houston, I put stress on the program director. He was using “Jim Austin” at another station as he moonlighted on week-ends. I recall seeing him sneak a peek around his office door when my name was announced as a visitor.  He offered me the job immediately, probably in relief that I wasn’t there as trouble. Aliases are not popular with just the criminal element, donchaknow and I do not believe any of mine will be in The Book of Life, Really! And, that’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.  AMEN

Did Alexander Think it Would Come To This?

The first phone number I recall was 46-J. It must have had six or eight ‘parties’ on it and it was nothing to hear my mother say, “Hang up the phone, Trixie!”  I was envious of my best friend’s ‘private line’. His phone number was “4”. Just “4”.  That was in Mt. Pleasant, Texas in the early forties. I recall the first dial-tone number was PA4-3102 (for PArkview).  The ‘4-3102’ remained for years,  with a number of different prefixes. There are some who can recall all their phone numbers and license plates, but today, I sometimes forget my own. My parents had the same phone number and house address for their whole life. I can’t recall the house numbers, but I can recall the cities, states and streets where I have lived. As to phone numbers, simply forget it. And as for cell phones, forget that too. I am so relieved to not have to deal with “TXT”ing ever again. I have progressed to CallCaption and that’s where I shall stay. Hearing loss restricts the clarity of a cell-phone call, but with the CallCaption, I can ‘read’ what is being said and can save it for review. The only problem is diction. Sometimes I get strange words when the speaker isn’t speaking English or slurs words. All-in-all, CallCaption is a GODsend, donchaknow, and even though Alexander Graham Bell probably had no idea just what his invention would lead to, the good-old handset is the best.  Other than weather related disturbance, my biggest problem is paying for the doggone service, donchaknow, Really! It’s not just a ‘plug-in’ any more. You have to have ‘internet’ that requires a modem. But, life isn’t always a dream and to wake up every morning is a very good thing, at that and today I get to play a few domino hands with friends. GOD IS GOOD! That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.   AMEN
