Flying High

I never met him personally, but I heard tales of how he could make men much taller quake in their boots. He never got a chance to have a dogfight in a P-51, but he bought one of his own, painted it Black and flew it for decades. I knew him as Buddy Bostick, but many others knew him as M. N. Bostick, a shrewd business man who had a daring streak a mile wide. Buddy started out as an announcer in radio and worked his way up in the broadcast world by owning both radio and television entities. He also owned a bank. Along with Troy Dungan, Frank Q. Dobbs, Toby Hughes, Bob Huffaker, Bill Arhos, Earl Greathouse, Robert Shearer, Norman Godwin, LeRoy Franklin,  John Scoggins  and others, I worked at KBTX in Bryan for Harry Gilliam,  one of the finest men I’ve ever known. Harry stood well over 6-feet, but he felt dwarfed in the presence of Buddy Bostick. (We all did) As I said, I never met the man, but that was fine since he seemed to bring heat with him. I am saddened to learn of his passing this week at the age of 98. He was a P-51 fighter pilot in WWII, but never go to fly in combat. He loved the Mustang P-51 so much, he purchased one, painted it black and flew it for decades. If there is a squadron of P-51 Mustangs in Heaven, I wager lM. N. “Buddy” Bostick is wing commander. Most importantly, I pray that he made it there, donchknow, really. In honor of a  man who ‘earned it’ and provided earnings for many others, a replica of Buddy Bostick’s black P-51 will be among my plastic models. That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.     AMEN
