Bears and Arms

I used to tell students,”You’d rather go bear-hunting with a switch than mess with me!” It, of course, was a broad statement, taken in jest, but the basic meaning got home.  I was fortunate to have the respect of most of my students as a teacher, however I would not like to meet a bear in the woods, donchaknow.  Just the other day, over breakfast with Ellen, Tom, and Caroline , we were discussing the Constitution. We had reached an agreement as to its intent regarding firearms.  There was a lull and Ellen said that she was opposed to arming bears.  We all stopped eating and looked at her. “Well”, she continued, ” that’s in the Constitution, isn’t it?”  Our jaws dropped. I then got her drift..”Ellen, the Constitution guarantees the ‘bearing of arms’, not arming of bears. “Well, that’s a relief, isn’t it?” There was no way we could refrain from a guffaw.  Ellen is a dear and she even laughed with us. She seemed to be bit confused, however. I’m not certain she really understood what was so funny. My neighbors can come up with some very interesting observations. I’ll share some from time to time.  That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.   AMEN
