Genius Yawns

I must not know ‘genius’ when I see it. Prince passed away. Prince was an entertainer, but I couldn’t tell his music from Elton John, who probably is a ‘genius’ also. Purple is one of MY favorite colors, but I do not wish to have the “Arch to the West” nor the Texas Tower, nor AT&T stadium, to be purple when I go HOME. Of course, that wouldn’t happen anyhow, but it’s just to make my point. We have men and women who stand dutifully in defense of our great country and when one of them is killed, we wait until some entertainer dies to cover the death, 24-7. Thousands stand in reverence and some simply stand there just to be part of an event. Even FOX NEWS covers the whole thing. But, why do we carry on over the loss of someone, when someone who dies in defense of our liberty or in the ‘line of duty’ against crime, when a man or woman, clean of uppers and downers, passes, we may put a crawl at the bottom of the page while showing thousands standing around someplace? ‘Tis a Puzzlement. I am saddened when anyone dies, but not just because they die, here. I am saddened to think where they woke up. Even though Prince’s spirit may live in the hearts of millions, it simply doesn’t matter if his soul isn’t with GOD. We pay tribute to men rather than obedience to the ONE who created us, in the first place. I am thankful I can write this for public perusal. The Bible says that my days of doing so are numbered. That’s what I think of the ‘value of genius’ and I Yawn. That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates. AMEN

Rudy

Every morning, if it is a good one,  one of my neighbors, Rudy, is busily resetting tables in our Dining Room. It may be for just an inch or two, but it’s important to clear the area around our breakfast counter for Rudy, even if there is room to begin with. Rudy is very ill, yet he manages to drive his truck and have a friendly response to everyone who speaks to him.  He was in the hospital for a few days recently and it concerned me. Now he is back.  I have watched him as his son visits and it is apparent that he is very proud of him.  Eyes light up and hearts are lifted every time a family member or friend visits here at Colonial Village.  Many of my neighbors have no one to visit.  If I weren’t taken for an intruder, I would like to visit, just for a chat.  It’s funny that we don’t feel comfortable doing that anymore.  Social impact is not always a good thing, donchaknow. It is my suggestion that anyone who has friend or family in a senior facility, make their eyes light up with a simple visit.  I believe GOD smiles just as broadly. I stopped by the table and thanked Rudy’s son for his visit.  That’s the least I can do.  That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.      AMEN

Poo Is Back!

Ron and Poo are neighbors here at the Village. Past the age of 90, both are very special. Ron walks very slowly, bent over a bit, with a constant scowl. Poo follows him, hold on to a belt loop. Once I got the courage to say, “Hi”, and other than his caustic humor they are quite a bit of fun. His sense of humor may rub some wrong, but to me he is refreshing. I offered the narration part in our July Patriotic Concert Rap, but he has determined it too much. Poo and Ron were our ‘King and Queen of Hearts” this past valentine and recently I saw that Ron was coming to dine alone. I usually wait for the third absence before inquiring, and Ron emotionally said, “Poo is pretty sick”. I knew that was serious. We’ve been praying for Ron and Poo and our prayers have been answered. For the past two days, Ron has come into dine with Poo hanging on. I said,”Ron, you look a lot better”, to which he replied, still with his ‘scowl’, “I know, isn’t it great!”. That’s my Ron and precious Poo (who can’t hear it thunder) just smiles. What a Joy they have brought into my life. What ‘Angels’ GOD has placed in my path. What can be more satisfying than this? Place Ron and Poo on your list, OK? OK! And that’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates. AMEN

Little Fire a’burnin’

It doesn’t happen often, but when it does the goosebumps are louder than the applause. In theater, when the fire ball bounces around from actor to actor, it is a breathlessly thrilling experience.  Actors work for hours, trying to get that feeling again, but it only comes, seldom and surprisingly.  I had such an experience when working on-air at KDWN radio in Vegas.  Al Williams was a genius, who decided to build a 50KW station in Las Vegas in the mid seventies. It was a powerhouse that covered the entire west coast from Mexico to Canada.  I began working with Ken Stahl in the morning slot, doing talk.  Mr. Williams had the bright idea to form a team who would bring the off-the-wall look at news so he took Ken, Tru Hawkins and me to breakfast with the proposal. Thus was born “The SNewsBusters”.  We had a ball and there were moments when that ball of fire flew around the studio. The show ran from 6AM to 9AM and we had a ball.  It also became the favorite of those riding to work. Wikipedia has a totally different take on our program, but Tru and I know the truth. We have no idea as to the whereabouts of Ken, but when we were “on” we were “hot”.  I just had a phone call from Tru who is back in Vegas, doing voice-overs and narrations.  Tru Hawkins is a jewel and totally ‘off-the-wall’ fun.  It is good to make contact with good friends, donchaknow. When a broadcaster has the blessed thrill of doing something well, benefiting others, it is just about as good as lemon icebox pie.  That’s what I get from my Box of Chocolates.   AMEN

Just Once

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.  Romans 10:9-10(NIV)”

When troubles abound (and they do), when dark clouds overcome (and they will), when the very most important things are just out of reach or lost (and that’s quite possible), when doubts assail and all is lost (and it’s a fact), then I simply lift my eyes to my Loving GOD and ask for strength to stand on Faith and find Joy and Hope in HIS promise from Romans. This promise had only to be accepted ONCE, but my flesh gets so strong and my mind loses touch with the reality of GOD so often, I need reminding and realize just how Merciful and Longsuffering is My LORD and My GOD.  I am so glad to continue to be under construction, aren’t YOU?  HEELAWZIE!! That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates.   AMEN

FATHER Knows Best

While going through some editing of our Old Time Radio script, it jumps out at me in bold letters! “FATHER” does know best. This program was very popular over half-a-century-ago. Robert Young did not necessarily ‘know best’, but was wise enough to leave the details to his wife. Successful on the job, but apt to bungle things around the house, Jim Anderson was always leaving a trail of mistakes that Margaret would calmly clean-up. Most fathers are like that, even today. Perhaps if we had focused on family more, things might have turned out better in the long-run. GOD set a difficult example to follow. GOD never makes a mistake (even though HE made me and many times it appears to have been one). To fail to follow FATHER’s rules always leads to unpleasant consequences with folks walking around, doing the same bad stuff, in a painful state, wondering why. The “WHY” will always be there, but the “HOW” to overcome is the “WHERE” GOD is and “WHEN” we fall on our face in humility and surrender ‘self’, seeking HIS face, then the “WHAT” we’ve needed is the Peace of Faithfulness and Hope. My FATHER know ‘best’, what I need, so I’d best hang around HIS house, donchaknow. That’s what I get from My Box of Chocolates. AMEN

Are you kidding me?

“This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” Romans 13: 6-7 NIV

Every time ‘outgo’ goes up and ‘income’ stays the same, one wonders just how that is possible. GOD inspired the writer of the Book of Romans to give specific orders as to how we handled the action of authorities. It is probably true that folks have not been given a raise, nor has the cost-of-living-increase been included. “Tis a Puzzlement, yet I somehow make it through a year without being relegated to the ‘work farm’.  Prices may increase, but when it’s all said and done, things balance out without having to borrow.  That is, IF we are diligent in our spending. Good budgeting makes a difference.  I’ve shared my experience with The Dave Ramsey School of Finance. Dave makes sense and I assure you that if you follow his plan, it works.  It’s just common sense, but who ever said sense was so common? It probably is the exception rather than the rule. If you have the problem of meeting wants instead of needs, try Dave Ramsey’s way of living out of an envelope. It works and it allows us to honor what Romans says. That’s a good feeling, donchaknow.  That’s what I get from my Box of Chocolates.    AMEN
